Wi-Fi is everywhere these days. So much so that Google is playing around with a cell phone service that relies mostly on Wi-Fi. Nevertheless, there are times when Wi-Fi is just not an option. If your life is anything like mine, that will be the moment when you absolutely must get your laptop online to make adjustments to a document, or reply to a lengthy email. Sure, you could tough it out and do this work on your phone, but that small screen can be a big hassle for major work. That's why knowing how to turn your smartphone into a Wi-Fi hotspot for your laptop is so useful. Here’s how to do it on Android, iOS, and Windows 10 Mobile. [ Further reading: Our best Windows 10 tricks, tips and tweaks ] TIP: Keep in mind that many U.S. carriers have specific plan requirements before you can officially use your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. In fact, some carriers may automatically switch you to a plan that includes this feature if you use your phone as a hotspot. Android (based on ...

We’re used to hearing about new banks that have signed on to support Android Pay as Google ever-expands its mobile purchasing system. But an announcement this morning is looking to add even more value. Now you’ll be able to use Android Pay even if you don’t have a bank or credit card to add to your wallet. Google has announced a partnership with PayPal that allows you to use your account to buy things anywhere Android Pay is accepted. While PayPal users have long been able to access their accounts in the real world via PayPal Credit, the new Android Pay integration will open up mobile contactless payments to a wide array of people, allowing them to use the balances to pay for things at McDonalds or Wal-Mart. The partnership is a boon for Android Pay, which is competing against Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and other store-based services for dominance. As Google describes, “Millions of people already use their PayPal account to make online purchases, receive payments and send money to ...

When Mohit starts his computer, all he hears is “nonstop beeping,” and then his monitor enters power-saving mode. All I can say is “we’ve all been there,” or at least I certainly have many, many times. It’s like turning on your car expecting to hear the engine fire up and purr like a kitten, only to hear sputtering and coughing and be left with a hairball. Not all is lost, though, because those annoying beeps are actually like a Morse code in computer BIOS language. Every computer runs a quick test before booting to make sure everything is functioning properly. Every time you turn on your PC it runs a program called POST, which stands for Power On Self Test. This quick test is your PC's way of making sure everything's working fine before it proceeds to the boot sequence—sort of like NASA engineers checking all the rockets prior to launch. While the POST is running you can actually see the results on your display, assuming it’s working. It looks like the compu...

Barry asked how to remove the login from his new Windows 10 laptop. Recently Answer Line discussed getting rid of the Windows 10 password by tinkering with Windows’ power settings. Those tips to remove the password prompts certainly work as long as you’re not on a laptop, but I’m going to show you how to remove the password entirely so you’ll never need to enter it. Of course, this unsafe maneuver comes with all the typical disclaimers such as this isn’t secure and it will allow anyone to access your PC, so you’ve been warned. This is just for people whose PCs live at home, in an environment with little to zero strangers passing by, and no need for it to be under lock and key all the time. Also these instructions were carried out on my personal system, which runs Windows 10 Home. Netplwiz is a “hidden” tool used to control user accounts. First, click the Windows 10 Start Menu and type Netplwiz. Select the program that appears with the same name. This window gi...
#Report# Restore a Windows 7 backup in Windows 10

Aren’t you glad you have a backup? Without it, you would lose everything—instead of just the hardware. I’m going to assume here that you used Windows 7’s built-in backup system, because that’s the default and the one you want for recovering data. (An image backup is for recovering Windows itself, which you don’t want to do on a new PC.) I’ll also assume that your new PC runs Windows 10. So the real trick here is to restore a Windows 7 backup in Windows 10. Plug your backup drive into your new PC and make sure you can access its contents. Then, in the search field near the Start button, type backup and select Backup and Restore (Windows 7). Once the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) window comes up, click or tap Select another backup to restore files from. (Microsoft apparently doesn’t mind ending a sentence with a preposition.) If there’s more than one backup on the drive, select the appropriate one (probably the most recent). In the Restore Files (Advan...
