#report#Microsoft finally reveals what data Windows 10 collects from your PC

There are all kinds of new features in the Windows 10 Creators Update rolling out on April 11, but one change really sticks out: greater transparency about the data that Microsoft collects from your PC. There are new dashboard screens that all Windows 10 users will see the first time they install or upgrade to the Creators Update. Perhaps more interestingly, for the first time Microsoft has detailed information about the user data it collects for diagnostics. Diagnostics collection Let’s start with the diagnostics collection, as Microsoft’s come under heavy fire from privacy advocates for refusing to allow users to disable it completely while simultaneously refusing to detail exactly what information Windows 10 collects from users. Microsoft published two Technet pages describing the data Microsoft collects from users on the Creators Update. There are two levels of diagnostic data: basic and full. The information is quite detailed and we won’t get into it here, but if you’re i

#report#Why won’t my printer connect to my wireless router?

Troubleshooting this problem will vary depending on the type of printer you have and the type of computer you’re pairing it with. The process for setting up a printer on a wireless network differs a bit from printer to printer, and fixing the issue will be different depending on if it had been previously connected without issue or if you’re having issues with the initial setup. The first thing to do is to check the documentation that came with the printer and follow the instructions for connecting to a network. You should be able to find a copy on Canon’s support site if you have lost the original (or on another manufacturer’s website if you don’t have a Canon printer). Generally, with printers, you can use the disc or over-the-air installation software that came with the printer and run the setup program again if something has changed with your Wi-Fi network. Follow the on-screen prompts (which will probably require you to connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable), a

#report#How to fix a dead key on your keyboard

One bad key on your keyboard can make it impossible to write even the simplest email. After all, without the N key, your kids might be stuck eating “afterschool sacks.” Here’s how to fix the problem. [Have a tech question? As Answer Line transitions from Lincoln Spector to Josh Norem, you can still send your query to answer@pcworld.com.] First, if your keyboard doesn’t have a separate number pad, check the Numlock key. If it’s on, it might rearrange some keys and make others unusable. Otherwise, there’s probably something below the bad key. You have to get it out. If it’s an external keyboard, turn it over and gently tap the back. If that doesn’t work, unwind a paperclip and try dislodging stuff from beneath the key. But don’t try either of these with a laptop’s built-in keyboard If neither of those worked, or if the problem is with your laptop’s built-in keyboard, use compressed air to blow out whatever is beneath the problem key. You can buy a can of compressed air for as l

#report#The three laws of smart PC backups

Backups are a critical part of anyone's digital life. The key is not to make it too complicated. Here are three laws—they're more like guidelines—to constructing a solid backup strategy. Law 1: Back up regularly Backups aren't much use if you aren't doing them on a regular basis. How often you should backup depends on your personal situation. Some people only bother with backups on a weekly or monthly basis, while anyone who's creating new files on a daily basis will want to back up hourly or at the end of each day, depending on how mission critical your files are. [ Further reading: How the new age of antivirus software will protect your PC ] It doesn't matter which interval you choose as long as it's designed to cache as many new files as possible before your internal hard drive goes offline for good. Law 2: Have an offsite and onsite backup Once you've decided on an interval, it's time to create two backups. That way you have three cop

#report#Online privacy tips: 3 ways to control your digital footprint

Like real footprints, your digital tracks leave a record of where you’ve been and what you’ve done. They show your searches, what you bought, which sites you visited, and the opinions you’ve expressed on social media. Many for-profit companies, both legitimate and criminal, can make a profit out of knowing you better. Governments also like to get into the act. So it’s a good idea to get control of your digital footprint. 1. Be careful in social media In any online services you’re using, check the privacy settings. On Facebook, for instance, you’ll find them by clicking the lock icon in the upper-left corner of the screen and going through the various options. But that’s not enough. Before you post your status, re-examine what you’re saying and showing and ask yourself if this is something you’d want your parents, your kids, your in-laws, your boss, or the IRS to read. And then make sure you’re sending it only to the people you want to see it. 2. Use multiple identities Th

#report#Google Chrome will start blocking noisy autoplay videos in January

Google is taking aim at one of the biggest scourges of the modern web. Starting in January 2018, the Chrome browser will automatically block noisy autoplay video on webpages. “One of the most frequent user concerns is unexpected media playback, which can use data, consume power, and make unwanted noise while browsing,” Google wrote in a blog post. “To address this, Chrome will be making autoplay more consistent with user expectations and will give users more control over audio.” [ Further reading: Best web browsers of 2017: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera go head-to-head ] In Chrome 64, autoplaying videos will be blocked by default unless they’re muted, or if “the user has indicated an interest in the media.” That means autoplay will be allowed for a site if you’ve frequently played a video on it or added the site to your mobile homepage. You won’t need to manually play every YouTube video or Twitch stream you select, in other words. Autoplay will also be enabled if you “clicked

#report#Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will add helpful privacy setting tweaks

Privacy concerns have plagued Windows 10 since its launch. It’s no surprise: The operating system is designed to ensnare you in Microsoft’s services, and you can’t stop it from sending Microsoft basic telemetry data about your device. But Microsoft has been working hard to assuage the concerns, and on Wednesday it announced enhanced privacy settings coming in October’s Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. This spring’s Windows 10 Creators Update introduced simpler, yet more limited privacy settings during the installation process. The Fall Creators Update builds on that by making the full privacy statement available in the setup phase. Most people won’t bother reading the massive wall of legalese, but helpfully, Microsoft’s including “Learn More” links in the text so you can jump directly to the settings for how Windows 10 handles location, speech recognition, diagnostics, tailored experiences, and ads. Microsoft’s also making Windows 10’s per-app controls more like Android and iOS,

#report#7 ways to make the most of Google Keep for Android and iOS

Google Keep may not be the most robust note-taking app you’ll find on the Play Store, but for me, that’s a virtue rather than a drawback. When I need to make a grocery list or jot down a quick idea, I want to use something easy and fast, like a digital Post-It note for my phone. That’s Google Keep in a nutshell. Of course, just because Google Keep is relatively simple to use doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any tricks up its sleeves. Indeed, once you know what you’re doing, you can perform tricks like having your latest Keep notes appear on your Android or iOS home screen, or make your shopping list pop up the moment you arrive at the grocery store. You can also add narration to a doodle, color-code your notes, share a note with a friend, save selections from a webpage, and more. Put the Google Keep widget on your home screen One of the best ways to make the most of Google Keep is to install the Keep widget on your home screen. Once you do, you’ll be able to create new notes with a

#report#iPhone X: Face ID, OLED screen, wireless charging and the other features you'll care about most

iPhone X: It’s real, it’s here, and it’s very expensive. After months of rumor and speculation, followed by the biggest pre-launch leak ever, on Tuesday we finally laid eyes on the iPhone X (you pronounce it “iPhone Ten”). It comes with a jet-black OLED screen topped by a TrueDetect camera system that enables a brand-new Face ID unlocking system and Animoji features. Apple will take preorders for the iPhone X starting Friday, October 27, and the phones ship November 3. iPhone X starts at $999 for 64GB of storage (the highest starting price of any iPhone to date), with a 256GB upgrade for $1149. To compare, the just-announced 4.7-inch iPhone 8 is $699 for the same storage. iPhone X OLED screen, and even better battery life With the new thin bezel and—gasp—no Home button, holding the iPhone X will feel like you’re holding a screen. That screen is 5.8 inches diagonally, and uses an OLED display instead of the LCD screen in past models. It’s got a resolution of 2436x1125, for a shoc

#report# 6 things you'll miss if you switch from iOS to Android

So I finally did it—I made the switch from iOS to Android, and I’m gleefully doing things that were never possible on my iPhone, from pinning contacts to the home screen and swiping notifications any which way, to picking a new SMS and unlocking my phone with my face. All in all, I’m a happy camper. But I’d be lying if I said there was nothing I missed about iOS. Indeed, there are a bunch of tiny touches on my old iPhone that I never appreciated until they were gone, like Safari’s easy-on-the-eyes Reader Mode and being able to scoot the top of the tall screen down within reach. Some of these features you can replace if you make the switch; others, though, you’ll have to do without. Reader Mode in Safari If you’re browsing a webpage on your iPhone or iPad that’s designed for desktop or otherwise cluttered with junk, Safari offers a clever trick: Reader Mode, which strips away everything but headlines, text and pictures—in other words, the bare essentials of the page. You can even ch

#report#What to do when your laptop's touchpad stops working

When your laptop’s touchpad stops responding to your fingers, you’ve got a problem. Have you ever tried to use a Windows PC without a mouse, touchpad, or other pointing device? It’s all but impossible. If the problem just started, reboot your computer and see if that fixes it. (Yes, I know that’s painfully obvious, but we all sometimes overlook the obvious.) If that doesn’t work, try these solutions. First, make sure you haven’t accidentally disabled the touchpad. In all likelihood, there’s a key combination that will toggle the touchpad on and off. It usually involves holding down the Fn key (which is probably near the lower-left corner of the keyboard) while pressing another key. But what other key should you press? It’s probably one of the function keys (F1 through F12), although it might be something else. Examine the keyboard, paying particular attention to the little icons (usually blue) on some of the keys. Look for an icon that might suggest the touchpad. Unfortunately,
