#Report# How to attach your PC or laptop to any TV

图片
Andrew Amanda asked how to connect his PC to a TV. If there’s anything in the computer world that’s become significantly easier over the years, it’s connecting your PC or laptop to a TV. Even vintage TVs—as long as they have an auxiliary input of some sort, whether it be HDMI, DVI, component, or even composite. There may be a digital to RF converter out there somewhere, I just haven’t seen it. The qualifier here is that unless your computer has an exact match for the older video connection technology on the TV in question, such as a VGA port, it will probably require HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C output. These signals, being digital, can be translated to analog or other types of digital signals through a converter or adapter. There is one exception: DVI-I and DVI-A (rare) both included analog signals that could be used to drive standard VGA connections. I have about five of those small DVI-to-VGA dongles, not to mention several HDMI-to-DVI types, which are similarly simple an...

#Report#How to download YouTube videos: 4 things you need to know

Sure, it's easy to download videos from YouTube, but doing it legally is another proposition. While there's no law that specifically says you can't download videos from YouTube for free, YouTube's rules are very clear. Before you start downloading YouTube videos, read on for four things you need to know, starting with... There's only one 100-percent legit way to download videos from YouTube If you want to download YouTube videos confident in the knowledge that you're on the right side of the law, there's just one way to do it: by signing up for YouTube Red. #report#How to download the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update right now

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update launched on October 17, stuffed with all sorts of cool new features. That doesn’t mean you’ll get it immediately. Microsoft staggers the rollout of big updates across various waves. But the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is available right now if you’re the impatient type. And bold: Microsoft only pushes the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update to PCs if it knows your computer won’t run into technical issues or nasty bugs, like the broken webcams, Kindle-induced crashes, and system freezes that followed in the wake of Windows 10’s Anniversary Update in 2016. In fact, Microsoft actively discourages workarounds like the one below even though it makes them available. Your PC will probably be fine if you download the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ahead of schedule, all that said—but heed the warning and back up your PC’s data before you take the plunge. Better safe than sorry! Before you force the issue, check to make sure that the Windows 10 Fall C...

#report#Why won’t my printer connect to my wireless router?

Troubleshooting this problem will vary depending on the type of printer you have and the type of computer you’re pairing it with. The process for setting up a printer on a wireless network differs a bit from printer to printer, and fixing the issue will be different depending on if it had been previously connected without issue or if you’re having issues with the initial setup. The first thing to do is to check the documentation that came with the printer and follow the instructions for connecting to a network. You should be able to find a copy on Canon’s support site if you have lost the original (or on another manufacturer’s website if you don’t have a Canon printer). Generally, with printers, you can use the disc or over-the-air installation software that came with the printer and run the setup program again if something has changed with your Wi-Fi network. Follow the on-screen prompts (which will probably require you to connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable), a...

#report#The three laws of smart PC backups

Backups are a critical part of anyone's digital life. The key is not to make it too complicated. Here are three laws—they're more like guidelines—to constructing a solid backup strategy. Law 1: Back up regularly Backups aren't much use if you aren't doing them on a regular basis. How often you should backup depends on your personal situation. Some people only bother with backups on a weekly or monthly basis, while anyone who's creating new files on a daily basis will want to back up hourly or at the end of each day, depending on how mission critical your files are. [ Further reading: How the new age of antivirus software will protect your PC ] It doesn't matter which interval you choose as long as it's designed to cache as many new files as possible before your internal hard drive goes offline for good. Law 2: Have an offsite and onsite backup Once you've decided on an interval, it's time to create two backups. That way you have three cop...

#report#Google Chrome will start blocking noisy autoplay videos in January

Google is taking aim at one of the biggest scourges of the modern web. Starting in January 2018, the Chrome browser will automatically block noisy autoplay video on webpages. “One of the most frequent user concerns is unexpected media playback, which can use data, consume power, and make unwanted noise while browsing,” Google wrote in a blog post. “To address this, Chrome will be making autoplay more consistent with user expectations and will give users more control over audio.” [ Further reading: Best web browsers of 2017: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera go head-to-head ] In Chrome 64, autoplaying videos will be blocked by default unless they’re muted, or if “the user has indicated an interest in the media.” That means autoplay will be allowed for a site if you’ve frequently played a video on it or added the site to your mobile homepage. You won’t need to manually play every YouTube video or Twitch stream you select, in other words. Autoplay will also be enabled if you “clicked...
